Lorenzo Bigatti is a communication designer and researcher based in London. He works at the intersection of design and people, data and politics, and philosophy and technology. Through a multidisciplinary practise, he creates artefacts and design systems investigating human nature and the construction of culture. By engaging audiences with these artefacts, he raises social awareness and builds dialogue around important contemporary issues.
After completing a Diploma in a science-focused high school, Lorenzo completed a Bachelor of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, and spent an exchange semester at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd as an Erasmus student. He then moved to Beijing, China to work as a graphic designer at MaxOffice, a communication and research-based design studio. The experience of living in China greatly informed his interest in the risks related to personal data control and the consequential dangers for freedom of expression and speech.
In 2017, he moved back to Europe from Beijing, and started his Master of Design at the Designskolen Kolding in Denmark. During his Master’s degree he self-initiated many projects including a design magazine called Cellophane, which is curated from an open submission process, and is focused on the impacts of technology, politics and design. Lorenzo both work on content creation, curation and art direction of the magazine.
Lorenzo graduated in June 2019 and is now based in Milan, where he works as a freelance designer as well as developing personal projects. These personal projects are based around the theme of complexity in communication, and focuses on how people interact and share information, to create meaningful ways of translating ideas through visual language. His current work addresses the perception of digital identity, the uncanny relationship between virtual and real, and the idea of the internet as an omnipresent, permeative, and entangling power structure.
